|
February 25, 2008 AMID the growing clamor for the resignation of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, medical practitioners and the clergy were one in their call for unity and sobriety during a free medical mission and prayer rally held yesterday in front of the Manila Broadcasting Company in Pasay City. Members of the Philippine Medial Association (PMA) and Heal the Nation Interfaith Council (HNIC) comprised of different religious groups and congregations said it is time now to heal all wounds of the past and start anew through physical and spiritual rejuvenation.
Protest groups from all sectors have sprouted over the weekend asking for President Arroyo to step down as a consequence of controversies involving anomalous government transactions, which include the controversial ZTE National Broadband Network deal involving millions of dollars. The PMA and the HNIC appealed to everyone to calm down and instead address the seemingly insurmountable problems of the country by joining hands in bringing peace and solidarity through prayers, genuine public service and humanitarian endeavors. PMA president Dr. Jose Sabili said doctors and physicians throughout the country are now taking the initiative by conducting free medical missions which would address the physical concerns of Filipinos. For his part, HNIC spokesman Patriarch Florentino Teruel of the Apostolic Catholic Church revealed that in order for any move by government to initiate positive changes in the country to become successful, there must first be efforts geared towards spiritual reform and moral recovery. Some 5,000 patients from indigent families from different parts of Metro Manila were able to avail fo the free medical missions given by some 50 member-doctos of the PMA while preachers from various religious groups supporting the HNIC prayed for healing of the nation.
